One of my fondest childhood memories was eagerly waiting for each Sunday to arrive so that I could watch the prime time show, “60 minutes”. It wasn’t the 55 minutes of jam-packed deep coverage of a politically charged issue that captivated my attention. Instead, I was attracted to the on screen presence of an avuncular gentleman with the distinct bushy eyebrows and the devil may care tousled hairstyle that accented his TV persona. His name alone is sustenance for marketing and social media. His segment, ‘A few Minutes with Andy Rooney’ concluded the erudite commentary of “60 minutes”. This is why he would be great as the head of a marketing firm.

The show was an intense no-nonsense critique of the latest news replete with exclusive interviews was relieved by Andy Rooney’s adroit execution of satiric humor. The man had a ability of delivering a series of insightful diatribes regarding mundane things in a comical manner. He achieved this by focusing on aspects that we find either annoying or controversial. Then we complain about the idiocy of it all. He had a warehouse of facial expressions that complemented his irascible statements and this made his ‘complaining’ that much more comical and enjoyable. Laughter we have been told is healthy for the soul. That being said is something we all can use at the end of a hectic week.

He is a celebrated television personality who was never at a loss for words and not timid to speak his mind-about anything. His recommendations would spice up any blog. His celebrity life was peppered with controversial things that he said and for which he never apologized for. This is an superior trait. His fearlessness is a trait all executives should copy.

Believe it or not but “A few minutes with Andy Rooney’ may not have happened if it wasn’t for the persistence of Andy Rooney. He was the one who had to convince the producers that the viewers would enjoy his irascible approach to mundane life. Can you fathom anyone taking his spotlight on “60 minutes”? There is just one more thing I wanted to pass on. It is one of my favorite Andy Rooney quotes “I didn’t get old on purpose. It just happened. If you’re lucky, it could happen to you.” His down to earth attitude appeals to many.

I’m sure that if Andy Rooney had a blog people would be tracking his every post. His frankness is refreshing. Here is a man who is able to find the humor in mundane thing. He is able to question social mores and create impressive presentations to illustrate the inanity of things. Laurels to Sixty Minutes!
